“Come on, you can do it.” “Just try it, you may like it.” “You’ll never know unless you try.”
I admit, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said these exact same phrases to Buddy over the years. Coaxing him into the pool at swim class. Convincing him to try tomato sauce with his pasta (c’mon, you like tomatoes, it’s the same thing!). Encouraging him to sound out a word he doesn’t recognize. As parents, we want to help our children open their minds to new experiences and give them the confidence to tackle any new (and potentially scary) situations head on.
And now it’s time to take my own advice.
I’ve wanted to start this blog for a long time, but I always managed to make an excuse why I couldn’t do it. I’m too busy. I’m technologically challenged. Who the heck wants to read my random thoughts? Yet, there it remained over the years, like a nagging voice at the back of my head. Finally, the other day, I told Buddy I was scared of trying something new and I wasn’t sure whether or not I was going to go through with it. He paused, looked at me solemnly, and said:
“Do or do not. There is no try.”
And there it is. You can’t really argue with the words of a 900 year-old Jedi Master now, can you? So here I am. Thanks, kiddo (even though your loyalties obviously lie with Dark Side of the force). And with that — welcome to Keeping Mommy Sane!

LOL – we use that phrase quite often in our house, usually just in the reverse.
