I love taking my son to the movies. Okay, part of it is has to do with having an excuse to eat candy and drink a 40 oz fountain Diet Coke. But mostly it’s because so many of the animated movies that have come out in recent years (“Despicable Me,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Megamind,” “Monsters vs. Aliens,” etc.) are aimed at both parents and kids. From the hidden innuendos to the pop culture references to the smart, witty writing, I’ve found myself laughing alongside my son during many a film.
Next on our list? The 3D animated movie “Escape from Planet Earth,” which I think was quite literally made for my son, who is fascinated with anything involving outer space, aliens and spaceships.
Here’s the synopsis: Astronaut Scorch Supernova (voiced by Brendan Fraser) is a national hero on his home planet, Baab, pulling off amazing, daring acts of bravery with the help of his nerdy brother, Gary (the hilarious Rob Corddry, who almost made me pee my pants in “Hot Tub Time Machine”.)
The brothers learn about an SOS from a “notoriously dangerous planet,” and Scorch recklessly bounds off for another exciting mission – despite his brother’s warnings – and ends up in a trap set by the evil Shanker (the awesome William Shatner). It’s then up to the scrawny and cautious Gary to be the hero and save not only his brother, but also his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure-seeking son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit).

Looks like a really fun movie to take kids to see!! I totally use going to the movies as an excuse to pig out on both candy and popcorn. Yeah, I can’t make movie-going a frequent activity. LOL

My kids got Despicable Me this Xmas and it’s one of my favorites that isn’t a classic animated Disney. I also really liked How to Train Your Dragon. We are halfway through Hotel Transylvania right now and it reminds me a lot of the Megamind, Despicable Me type animation. Very cute. Good clean fun!
