I like “family night in” at our house.
I’d like to tell you that it usually involves all of us cuddled under the blankets together, a roaring fire before us in the fireplace, bowls of organic popcorn made with coconut oil on our laps as we laugh and giggle as the story unfolds on the big screen.
But if I told you that, I’d be lying.
Want to know what family night in is really like at my house? I’ll walk you through it.
First there’s the arguing between Buddy and Mimi about what to watch.
Followed by the demands for snacks. Which somehow never ends up being popcorn, no matter how much I offer.
Instead of cuddling all together, Buddy usually sits on the floor about three inches away from the screen.
Mimi starts off sitting right next to him, then as she grows tired, eventually ends up on someone’s lap.
Dr. G. sits on the side of the couch closest to the side table so he has a place to set down his beer (a necessity when watching some of these mind-numbing kids’ movies).
And I usually fall asleep about 45 minutes into the movie.
But, hey, we’re all together and that’s what counts, right?
This weekend we’ll have a new Netflix option to choose from — Fuller House, a reboot of the original, saccharin- sweet ’90s sitcom of my youth (remember that old TGIF lineup on ABC??) — that premieres today!
As someone who grew up watching that show, I admit part of me is curious to see how the characters have evolved, will the show still have that awful laugh track, how will they address Michelle’s absence, will Kimmy Gibbler still drive me nuts.
But I honestly have no idea what my 9-year-old and 4-year-old will think of it. Because (and it’s kind of sad) they don’t really watch those types of family sitcoms (in fact, do any really exist anymore??). So will they find it funny? Silly? Boring?
We’ll add it to our list this weekend, and in the meantime, check out some of these curated, family-friendly collections based on the “Fuller House” characters (who knows, maybe we’ll find something everyone can agree on!):
