Last year, Buddy and I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing The Nutcracker, performed by the Boston Ballet (read the recap here). I wasn’t sure what my energetic then-7-year-old would think of the ballet, but to my surprise, he LOVED it … the music, the costumes, even the dancing.
This year, all four of going to the show, since I think Mimi is old enough to sit through the production and I’m pretty sure her fascination with everything involving ballerinas and pretty costumes (along with that silly dancing bear) will hold her attention (fingers crossed).
I’m really excited for the 2014 production! The set is designed to look like the early 1800s — think Jane Austen era — and involve lots of moving scenery. Over 350 costumes were created, each handmade and custom painted, and each performance is accompanied by P.I. Tchaikovsky’s renowned score, performed by the Boston Ballet Orchestra (which was amazing last year).
Here are some scenes from last year’s performance!
Another change this year? The addition of Story Hour. This year, the Boston Ballet School is headed around the community to various North Shore locations for a festive and interactive Nutcracker story hour, where kids can learn about the story, characters, and music of this beloved holiday tradition.
We saw The Nutcracker in mid-December last year, and it was not only a special day with my little guy, but it really put us in the holiday spirit. I can’t wait to go back again this year in what I hope will become one of our family’s holiday traditions.
All performances of The Nutcracker will take place at The Boston Opera House from November 28 – December 31, 2014. Tickets can be purchased here.
