Meal Planning: Week of January 6

Oh, meal planning, I’ve missed you!

The last few weeks have been utterly crazy, between the holidays, kids being home from school and a week of various house guests. To say we’ve subsided on junk food the last two weeks of 2012 would be an understatement. I think my entire family – kiddos included – are pretty psyched to get back to our normal routine.

So with that, here’s what I have on tap this week:

Recipe links: Soup (http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2013/01/carrot-soup-with-tahini-and-crisped-chickpeas/), torellini/peas (http://www.marthastewart.com/314134/tortellini-with-peas?center=852566&gallery=360627&slide=262643); Kale Rice Bowl (http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/2012/08/spicy-peanut-portobello-kale-rice-bowl.html)

And with the return to normalcy comes the return of New Food Monday! (I’m sure Buddy is just giddy with delight). We’ve been, ahem, kind of lax about it the last few months weeks and we need to jump back on the bandwagon because I’ve definitely noticed a decline in Buddy’s willingness to try new foods since we loosened the reins on this. (Not familiar with New Food Monday? Check out this post). If Monday’s dinner is a success (and really, who can resist Martha??), I’ll post the kids’ review in the New Food Monday tab up above.

My workout schedule, however, will be anything but normal and routine this week, thanks to CrossFit. I am planning a post in a few weeks with my initial thoughts about CrossFit; I want to wait until I complete the four required Elements classes. But as of today, I’m two classes in and … whoa. I usually do Body Pump twice a week and I haven’t been sore like this from a class in ages. I have my last two Elements classes this week before they unleash me in the gym with the big boys and girls, which scares the hell out of me.

Sunday: I’m planning 7 miles, probably at the gym, because I hate running outside when there’s snow on the ground, but to be honest, it depends on how I’m feeling from Friday night’s CrossFit class (sad!). Also, on a side note, I might try running to an audio book for the first time; I’m about halfway through Emily Giffin’s Where We Belong and I am hooked.

Monday: CrossFit Elements #3 (at 8pm – ugh)

Tuesday: Ha, we’ll see how I’m doing. If I feel okay, I might attempt to take spin class in the morning at 5am. Yes, I think this sounds completely insane. I’m about 90% percent sure I’ll end up sleeping right through it :)

Wednesday: Quick run in the morning (maybe 3 miles) since I have to be in work early and have my first PTO meeting that night!

Thursday: AM run or spin class – will play it by ear

Friday: Boot Camp

Saturday: CrossFit Elements #4 (at 7am?!)

This is what I’m thinking as of today, but so much of this will depend on how my body is feeling. I don’t want to push myself and risk an injury, especially now that I’ve declared my intentions to run a half marathon in the spring.

Anyone else run while listening to an audio book? Do you like it, or do you find it hard to concentrate both on the story and your strides?

  1. Yum! Your menu looks great- I want to check out that carrot soup. I tried one sample cross fit and it was intense! I would like to incorporate it more but have a hard time doing but HIIT moves (like box jumps) alongside running without injuring myself. Maybe after this marathon I’ll look into it again. It’s definitely an amazing workout!

  2. I must try the Spicy Peanut Portobello recipe! Yum! I’ve never tried listening to audio books but I do like podcasts. Actually, I never even thought of books for running, but it might be perfect for training for my first 50 miler! Thanks for the tip!
