Over Thanksgiving, Dr. G. and I ran a Turkey Trot 5K trail run in Pennsylvania. Of course, it had snowed about 3-4 inches the previous day, which meant, yep, we’d be running through the snow. And I have to say, it was kind of fun … and reminded me that I actually don’t hate winter running.
But the thing about winter running is having the right gear, and I’m always on the lookout for new, cute and functional running clothes when the temps dip below 40 degres. So when I was offered the chance to check out a new line of performance gear from Eddie Bauer called First Ascent, I agreed.
Although, I admit, I was kind of skeptical. Eddie Bauer and athletic apparel? Until that point, I had either equated the brand with more casual gear aimed at a, um, slightly different generation, or with baby gear (carriers, strollers, play yards, safety gear, etc.).
But let’s just say I was pleasantly surprised.
Here is my take on the three products I tested:
Incendiary 1/4-Zip Pullover Shirt: For some reason I always gravitate toward pink running gear, even though I am soooo not a pink person “in real life,” but I was really drawn toward this blue 1/4 zip. The material isn’t too thick but, whoa, is it warm! I rain in 25 degree weather with only a wicking tank as a base layer and was totally fine. And it has my three must haves for this type of shirt: longer length, thumb holes and a true turtleneck.
My only complaint, since I’m being totally honest, is that the material — while warm and technical — shows every lump and bump, and isn’t very forgiving if you’re having a bloated kind of day.
Sandstone™ Soft Shell Jacket: This is my first-ever running shell, and all I can say is, why haven’t I bought one of these before? The fit (Medium) was perfect: not too long with sleeves the right length. And LOTS of functional pockets. It’s ultralight, stretchy, water resistant (the water beads on the surface) … seriously, what more could I ask for in a shell? It’s worked great so far on those cold, rainy and/or windy runs.
Women’s Movement Leggings: And now my favorite of the three, the leggings/running tights. The first time I put them on I didn’t want to take them off, they were so comfy. And warm. I wore them for a sub-30 degree run and felt perfectly fine — no overheating, even though they’re not crazy thick. My favorite feature of these pants? The wide, contoured waistband with power mesh lining that flattens the old tummy … no muffin tops here! And there’s a hidden pocket for your keys, fuel, etc.
Oh, and I did I mention all of these items are currently on sale??
So yes, Eddie Bauer, you have piqued my interest. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for spring.
