In our family, Mother’s Day falls at the end of what is a string of continuous holidays and birthdays and celebrations — and is often trumped by my wedding anniversary, which usually falls on the same weekend.
I get (and send) cards each year, and am often treated to a yummy breakfast (whether served in bed or at a formal brunch), but it’s never been a holiday that I really stopped and given much thought to as far as what is means to me.
Which is kind of sad. Because I love being a mother. And I have so much to be thankful for as a mom, as a woman, as a person.
Here are the things this mom is thankful for this Mother’s Day:
Every day, every minute, every second that I have with these two healthy, smart, kind, and independent children.
A husband who loves me, who is an equal partner in this marriage, who has always been — and continues to be — my biggest champion and supporter, and who understands this mom gig can be hard at times and encourages me to go for a run or meet up with the girls and just be me (P.S. Happy 11th anniversary, Dr. G.!).
Kids who have taught me how to laugh more, play more, be silly, and see the beauty around me every day.
Parents who always encouraged me and raised me to believe I could do anything I wanted. I hope I can instill the same sense of determination and confidence in my own children.
A grandmother who has taught me more than she knows about marriage, motherhood, grace, selflessness, and unconditional love.
A family-friendly work environment and a phenomenal manager who understands the importance of workplace flexibility, especially for parents.
Spending this Mother’s Day with four generations of women in my family.
Kids who still find me “cool” and actually want to hang out and spend time with me.
Private jokes, knowing looks, and just-between-the-two-of-us traditions with my oldest child.
The privilege of experiencing and bearing witness to my kids’ “firsts”— first words, first steps, first day of school, first time riding a bike…
My “mom tribe” for understanding that it truly does take a village, and for always being willing to help each other out — be it an emergency pick up at school, shuttling the others’ kids to sports practice, or lending an ear (over a glass or two of wine, of course).
My mom blogger friends who bravely share their stories and experiences with the world, offering reassurance to the rest of us that we’re not alone.
Artwork covering every surface of my refrigerator.
Hugs, cuddles, Eskimo kisses, and the words, “I love you, mama.”
And coffee. Lots of coffee.
