I am a coffee addict. Ok, there I said it.
The good news about being a coffee addict in New England is that there is usually a Dunkin’ Donuts within a 5-10 minute drive of wherever you are (ok, I don’t have any scientific proof, but it totally feels that way.) That means I can usually get my caffeine fix whenever and wherever I want.
Much to Dr. G’s chagrin, I am a flavored coffee kind of girl … French vanilla, coconut, pumpkin, and my new favorite, snickerdoodle. But sometimes just a regular flavored coffee can be weak, more flavored syrup than coffee.
So lately I’ve been combining my flavored coffee with Dunkin’s new Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Dark Roast Coffee (which means that at least 30% coffee beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms).
I love that the Dark Roast blend has that sort of “coffee intensity” you’d expect without being bitter, which I understand has something to do with their unique roasting process. So my new go-to Dunkin’ coffee is a medium Dark Roast with one pump of snickerdoodle and skim milk. Perfection.
Since I don’t have access to that mysterious snickerdoodle flavor at home, I’ll get my Dunkin’ Dark Roast coffee grinds ready, then add a few small shakes of Pumpkin Pie spice, which gives the coffee a hint of pumpkin flavor. Delicious.
In addition to sending me some samples of the Dark Roast, the Dunkin’ team also shared some coffee myths, which I thought were pretty interesting (although that could be my addiction talking):
1. Does darker roast coffee = higher caffeine?
NO! Caffeine content is actually the same before and after roasting. There are minimal differences between dark roasts and lighter roasts of coffee, which can often be surprising to people. (<– I admit I totally thought it had more caffeine!)
2. It is okay to store coffee in your fridge?
NO! Coffee absorbs flavors and aromas of anything around it, which means that your coffee may end up tasting like some leftovers in your fridge. Store some of your coffee in an airtight container and then store the rest in the freezer, where it won’t pick up any meat or fish flavoring. (<– This was new to me!)
3. Why can I never brew coffee at home that tastes as good as coffee served at the restaurant?
You can! Mix two tablespoons of coffee per six ounces of water. If you’re grinding your own beans, be sure to not grind your coffee too fine as this will If you find your coffee to be too strong, just add some hot water! (<– Couldn’t agree more with the point about not grinding your coffee too fine!)
