We’re officially more than halfway through school vacation week! When Dr. G. and I were mapping out our vacation coverage, I said I would take Wednesday, and hatched up a plan for Buddy and I to have a mommy/son day and venture over to the Museum of Science, where the lovely folks had arranged for us to visit the Exhibit Halls (including the new Design Zone exhibit) and take in some of their awesome new IMAX and 3D movies. Then maybe we’d wander into Boston for lunch, grab a snack, then pick Mimi up at daycare.
Ahhh, what do they say again about the best laid plans?
On Tuesday morning, I saw the caller ID from Mimi’s daycare on my work phone and knew this wasn’t going to be good. I was right. The poor thing had clear signs of a stomach bug, meaning I had to come get her … pronto. The kicker, though, is that she couldn’t return until she was “symptom-free” for 24 hours – which meant Thursday.
And then I realized, hmmm, I’m not feeling too hot myself. Ugh.
I braced Buddy for the idea that we may have to postpone or scale back our grand plans, depending on how Miss Mimi and I were feeling. But thankfully, the stars aligned, and we both woke up on Wednesday morning feeling as good as new. So our mommy/son day turned into a party of three.
Here’s a glimpse into our day.
We are big fans (and frequent visitors) to the Museum of Science, so we spent most of our time in the new Design Zone exhibit, which gave the kids a chance to create their own video games, design a roller coaster and – to my daughter’s utter delight – boogy down at a dance party with disco-like lights. We also checked out the IMAX film “Journey Into Amazing Caves,” which was gorgeous, kept the kids entertained for 50 minutes and also confirmed my phobia of crawling into teeny, tiny spaces.
We hustled straight from the Omni theater to the 3D Theater, which was showing a movie about “Flying Monsters,” or the pterosaurs. Buddy was in heaven. Well, he would have been if the 3D glasses had fit his head properly. Ahh, my poor guy and his little, elf-like ears. I ended up having to hold the glasses on the back of his head with one hand while feeding Mimi gummy candies with the other so she would sit still.
At this point, I realized the museum was rapidly filling up with the vacation week crowd and eating in their small-ish cafeteria was not gonna happen. Which was okay, because after grabbing a quick bite at Buddy’s favorite place (Panera Bread … don’t ask) we had other plans. Oh yeah, it was “make-your-own-cupcake” time.
In the end, having an ambitious mom adventure day with both kiddos was a success … and props to Buddy for being such a good sport and not complaining when I told him his sister would be tagging along. So grown up of him.
Are you dealing with school vacation week? How are you surviving?

We’re so excited about taking both kids to the Museum of Science this year. Our kids both love Boston and we try to get up there for an overnight or an adventure a couple times a year. This is great, helping me plan out some of the things we definitely want to carve out time to do. Thanks!

My son could easily spend HOURS there π But I think next time we may avoid school vacation week.

Sounds like a fun day! We actually haven’t been to the MOS with the kids yet but it’s on the “to do” list.

It’s a lot of fun. I just might recommend staying clear of school vacation week π

You are good! My kids would LOVE this place!! We went home to DC for the break. We had a family b-day party and a Baptism. It was nice, but I wish we could have done some museums or something too!

I want to take my kids there so bad, I love that place. I try not to tell my kids we’re going somewhere like that just for that reason, if something happens (like someone getting sick) and we can’t go, I don’t want them to be disappointed. Lots of times I don’t tell them where we’re going until we can actually see the place.

That is awesome advice that I am definitely going to follow! I got totally lucky this time π

I really need to move this up higher on my things to do with the kids list. We’ve never been and I know they will love it.
