My back-to-school checklist for Buddy usually looks something like this:
- New sneakers (since he’s either outgrown or trashed his current ones)
- Check on status of lunchbox and backpack. Are they disgusting from camp? Do we need new ones? Can I squeak by with them for one more year?
- Should I buy him new clothes? Nahhh, because he’ll end up wearing shorts until November.
- Haircut. This one is a must.
Buddy has interesting hair. It gets super blond in the summer, and when it gets too long, it gets voluminous and feathery up top (circa 1985) and grows over his ears. Those are usually my signs that it’s time for a haircut.
That, and the first day of school.
Yet I know not all kids have the luxury of that back-to-school haircut, which is why I am thrilled to participate in Hair Cuttery’s Share-a-Haircut program. The program gives free haircut certificates to underprivileged community members, specifically kids in need as they head back-to-school. Over the past 16 years (!), the Share-A-Haircut program has reached more than 925,000 children.
So how does it work? It’s super easy. From now until August 15, for every child (up to age 18) who purchases a haircut at Hair Cuttery, a free haircut certificate will be donated to an underprivileged child in that same community.
In each market, certificates are distributed with the help of more than 100 local government and non-profit organizations that are closely tied to each community.
I mean, talk about a win-win.
School for us doesn’t start until August 31 (although I know many states and districts start school in mid-August), but I wanted Buddy to get a haircut before he heads off to his grandparents’ in Pennsylvania for the week (tear).
So on Tuesday, Buddy and I headed to a local Hair Cuttery (click here to find one near you).
And I am totally loving his cut! Short on the sides but longer on top so he can spike it up or use gel (something he’s FINALLY interested in doing). Plus, it only took 15 minutes.
Handsome guy.
But the best part, of course, is knowing our haircut helped another child in our community.
If your back-to-school list looks like mine, consider Hair Cuttery and give a haircut while you get a haircut. Because every student deserves to have a fresh and new haircut (and the confidence that it brings) on the first day of school.

What a great program! I hadn’t heard of it before, but we do have a Hair Cuttery near us so I’ll have to check it out for back-to-school haircuts.

Fantastic idea! My daughter is talking about chopping off her hair before school starts, so now I know where to take her. Thanks for sharing.

I hadn’t heard of this program before, so thanks for the tip. We have a Hair Cuttery in our town (I think!) so I will have to check it out. My son really needs a hair cut before school starts!

Your list is exactly like mine! Haircuts for sure and new sneaks! Everything else can wait!
