I admit it. We totally wussed out for New Food Monday Tuesday this week. We had grand illusions of making Smitten Kitchen’s broccoli parmesan fritters, since Buddy hearts broccoli, but between the Columbus Day holiday, all the activity yesterday and catching up with work today – plus the fact that we desperately needed to go grocery shopping – we realized that it was not very realistic. So we went simple. Easy.
And we kind of cheated.
We knew Buddy and Mimi both like scrambled eggs, and they both love cheese, so we decided to make cheese omelets for dinner, with toast, orange wedges and raw red pepper slices on the side. Kind of random. But it made Buddy smile because it’s what we also call a “Silly Dinner” – AKA breakfast for dinner. This has become one of our little Mommy-Buddy traditions when Dr. G. is travelingĀ for work (although we usually have chocolate chip pancakes for dinner … shhh ….)
So is it technically a new food if we’re combining two things they really like? I vote yes – especially since it was something they both enjoyed. But was it exciting? Not really. It was an omelet. Not too much to say about that.
But it was worth it for the sheer entertainment value … not to mention the lack of complaining and whining.
So it was a short, simple and sweet (albeit unambitious) New Food Monday and I’m okay with that. Because the reality is sometimes you have to wing it for dinner with what you have in your fridge and pantry. And, to be honest, given Buddy’s stubbornness and growing dislike of everything we’ve been serving for New Food Monday lately, maybe it’s actually a good idea that we let him off easy this week. Maybe now he can get back with the program š
But not two weeks in a row, my boy. Watch out, I pinned those fritters!Ā
Question: Do you ever serve “silly dinner” or breakfast for dinner? What’s your favorite thing to have?
