I love soup. Whether it’s cold gazpacho or a wintery veggie chili, I can’t get enough of it. Maybe it’s because there are so many vegetarian options? Or maybe it’s because soup is not only budget-friendly but it’s also an excellent way to use up those random veggies you find in the back of your fridge? All I know is that that the weather here in New England has taken on a decidedly autumn feel and the time has come for one of my favorite fall soups: Heidi’s delicious and simple carrot soup from 101 Cookbooks. Yummmmm.
But was I brave enough to try it for New Food Monday Tuesday? I knew it would be an uphill battle because Buddy has assured me on many, many occasions that he hates soup. Hates it.
Hmm, we’ll see.
That’s when I decided to call in some reinforcements. Enter Justin Timberlake (who I may or may not have a slightly inappropriate crush on).
I have no shame in resorting to gimmicks, so as my lead-in to our delicious soup dinner – and to show Buddy just how fun soup can be – I showed him this SNL clip. Because who can resist a grown man singing and dancing in a Cup O’Soup costume, right?
I don’t think Buddy was too impressed. While he did crack a smile, he mostly told me to stop singing, which is nearly impossible to do once that horrible yet annoyingly catchy song gets in your head. (Mimi, on the other hand, was much more interested in the video. That’s my girl.)
Not surprisingly, when presented with his beautiful bowl of soup, I got this delightful expression.
Buddy tried negotiating (and stalling) a few times, followed by his usual litany of whines and complaints about how much he hates New Food Monday and he hates soup and why, oh why, can’t he eat chicken nuggets every night? But eventually (read 20 minutes) he gave in and ate quite a lot, including his roll (which I was using as bait), because our family firmly believes that no soup is complete without a side of yummy, buttery carbs.
Tonight also confirmed something I had suspected: Buddy actually likes most of the new foods we try. When my back was turned, he whispered to Dr. G. that he thought the soup was good. But he didn’t want me to know. Maybe it’s a game to him, or a power struggle, or maybe Mr. Buddy is even more stubborn than we thought. I’m still not quite sure what to think about this … or how to approach next week’s NFM. Do I need to tweak my game plan?
So I guess I would call this NFM a moderate success, with only one complaint. I can’t stop singing this horrible mash-up of “Soup, there it is!” and the original “Whoomp! (There It Is),” which instantly brings me back to my junior year of high school. And I now offer my sincerest apologies to each and every one of you who now have that awful song stuck in your head as well. Don’t blame me, blame the soup. There it is.
Question: What is your favorite soup?
