Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends!
On Saturday, Buddy and I ran our second 5K together (here’s the recap of the first race). I was planning to write a recap when I thought, Why not let him tell you himself how the race went?
And so I’m excited to introduce my 9-year-old as today’s guest blogger, who wrote every word himself (trust me, it was soooo hard for me to not play the editor). Take it away, Buddy….
My Own View of the Shamrock Shuffle 5K
This is my second time running the Shamrock Shuffle.
At first as I got to the high school [where the race was taking place], my friends gave me the usual welcoming committee: playing a game and immediately made me join.
About 20 minutes later the race started. I decided to join a group of my friends. We ran fast at the beginning and my mom kept telling me I would get pooped. And I did.
About a mile in, I started to cry and said I couldn’t do it. I had a side cramp from running too fast at the beginning. Mom told me “You can do it!” And she put on my favorite Star Wars music.
Suddenly, my friend’s little brother and his dad came along and we started to run with them for awhile, until I started to get the hang of it (and my cramp went away). My mom told me, “Let’s see how many people we can pass!” and we started counting.
When I got to the corner up ahead, some girls I knew started to cheer my name and that gave me some self-confidence and we eventually came to my friend’s street and I got a cup of water from my friend’s mom.
Then I started to run again, and faster, too. I motored up a hill like a motorcycle and we turned back on to the main road. After a little while, we turned left on to another street that would take us back to the high school and the finish line. We were almost there!
When we saw the sign for 3 mile, my mom told me to run as fast as I could for .1 mile to the finish. So I did. I finished in 34:02 , about 4 minutes faster than last year. And in the end we passed 39 people.
I thought it was a lot of fun and my other friends all finished in under 30 minutes which is awesome. I would like to run this again but faster next time. Lesson: not run too fast at the beginning so I can run a faster 5K.
