Note: I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review but, as always, all opinions and text are my own.
We all know a certain holiday honoring moms is just around the corner. Sure, it’s great to have one day on the calendar when we get brunch/cards/flowers or (gasp!) get to sleep in late as a way to recognize all the hard work we put in the other 364 days of the year. You know, for all the times we had to pee in front of an audience. Or found that missing sock that was in plain sight. Or whipped up dinner with a screaming toddler clenched to our legs. Or tried to convince ourselves that a spritzing of body spray certainly counts as a shower.
Wouldn’t it be nice to carve out a little “Mother’s Day” time each day? You know, kind of like a happy hour? [Insert hand waving enthusiastically in air]. For some mommas, it’s a glass of wine, for others a cup of tea, and for some it’s a walk around the block.
Hmm, but for some ladies, it’s a beautiful martini.
I admit, I am more of a beer and wine kind of girl, but after checking out the new book The Big Book of Martinis for Moms, I may be stocking up on my vodka and gin.
Each one is presented as a “reward” for accomplishing a specific feat commonly experienced by most of us moms … you know, like fitting into your skinny jeans or teaching your son to pee and not leave the toilet seat up or changing a diaper blowout without calling in a HazMat team. And to make it easy for us harried moms, the book is broken up into very recognizable chapters, like “Bathroom-Related Feats” and “Chores/Discipline Feats.”
The recipes themselves are really easy and basic, only requiring a few ingredients, which is good for me, for two reasons: (a) I am clueless about how to make cocktails, and as a result, (b) we don’t have a lot of hard liquor in the house.
Overall, I thought the book was an entertaining read because I identified with most of these mommy triumphs and scenarios; they’re so true! And the writing is witty, clever — and completely tongue-in-cheek (so please save your emails telling me that I am encouraging the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism for the highs and lows of motherhood; the book is intended to be fun!).
To show you what I mean, I thought with Mother’s Day approaching, it would be appropriate to share a copy of the Stork Martini, otherwise known as the “We Did It Again Cocktail”:
And as my Mother’s Day gift to YOU, I am giving one copy of The Big Book of Martinis for Moms to one lucky reader! Simply enter using the entry form below! This giveaway expires May 17 at 12:00am ET.
