Did you know that more than 16 million children live in poverty in the United States? It’s a staggering — and sobering — statistic.
As many of us (myself included) fret and stress and complain about purchasing all the back-to-school items on our child’s supply list, it’s hard to remember that there are many other parents — maybe even some in our communities — that are worried not about buying the right size pencil box or teacher-request notebook for their child, but about providing enough food for their family to thrive.
That’s why it’s my pleasure to partner with Champions for Kids — a wonderful non-profit that connects people to the needs of children in their communities — on their SIMPLE Giving program.
Recognizing that children who eat healthy foods are better equipped to succeed academically, Champions of Kids is teaming up with Dole, Emerald, Kellogg Company and Walmart to ensure children have access to nutritious snacks.
And it’s so easy to help. All you have to do is purchase and donate snack food items at your local participating Walmart from August 1-18 and place them in the purple donation bins at the front of the store after checkout. (To see a list of participating stores, click here.) All of the donations go to children in the school district where the Walmart store is located!
August 18th is coming up soon, so now’s the time to act. When you’re heading to Walmart this week to begin stocking up on those back-to-school supplies, consider picking up a few nutritious snacks to help kids in your community.
