It’s ironic, isn’t it? That the season with the nicest weather (well, maybe not the nicest come mid-August) is often the hardest time to lead a healthy lifestyle. At least for me.
I mean, think about it. All the entertaining. Plus BBQs. Ice Cream. Margaritas. Vacations. And I have a hard motivating to go for a run when it’s 85 degrees and 95 percent humidity.
So this summer, I’m trying a new approach in an attempt to to jumpstart my routine (which has kind of slowed down a bit now that I’m not in training mode).
Sure, there’s the obvious: make healthy choices, like drinking more water (especially as the temperature rises). But I also want to supplement my workout routine with activities I actually enjoy doing.
So maybe I could only manage a three mile run in the humidity. Well, then at the end of the day, why not go for a bike ride with Buddy? Or play chase on the lawn? Or go for an early evening family walk … or walking more in general?
You know, the activities that remind you of the fun and relaxation of summertime when you were a kid … but with the added benefit of being able to spend time with my own kiddos.
Now that’s a win-win.
When it comes to food, you can’t beat the tasty treats of summertime. To try and keep my hunger in check, I usually try to have a high protein snack on my commute home. This way, I don’t attack the crackers and chips as I’m preparing dinner.
I usually just grab a protein or granola bar, but I am also loving this new line of Orchard Valley Harvest one ounce mini stand-up bags. I like how they’re portion-controlled … and how they fit in my car cupholder!
To celebrate the arrival of these new snacks (which are available in the produce section of local Market Basket supermarkets here in the Boston area), AND to help my readers jumpstart a healthy lifestyle this summer, the gang at Orchard Valley Harvest has a seriously awesome prize pack for one of you.
Check it out – you’ll receive:

I can relate so much to you. Summertime is when I usually eat the most fattening food. I get invited to a lot of pool parties which serve barbeque, hotdogs, burgers and of course booze and we all know what those things do to our body. I’d be so tired and hangover the next day that I wouldn’t have the energy to exercise or get up from bed at all. When I finally becomes rested there’s another party invitation and the cycle begins. I’m trying to change my summer habits because I’m not getting any younger and I know that it might take a toll on my health already. I still go to some parties but not as much as before because there are invitations that are just too good to passed on.

Toni Simpson
