Happy National Running Day! In honor of the occasion, I am participating in an interview and link-up with some of my fellow Sweat Pink ambassadors (thanks for organizing, Kristen!). Here we go:
Why do you run?
For my physical and mental well-being. To set a good example for my kids about the importance of being physically active. And so I can enjoy that glass or two (or three…) of wine on the weekends.
How do you plan to celebrate National Running Day?
Besides blogging about it? Ha. No, seriously, this year National Running Day falls on my strength training day (AKA Body Pump); it figures, right? And since I’m really trying to stick to my schedule this week, given my big race on Sunday, I’ll be running with you all in spirit today.
How many miles have you run so far this year?
I wish I kept track of this! But I suspect I average about 14-16 miles a week, so 64 miles a month, which brings me to about 400, taking races into consideration.
What big events do you have on the race calendar so far this year?
Well I have the Newport 10 Miler on Sunday!! This was hands-down my favorite race (and best performance) last year, and while I don’t think it’s in the cards for me to PR, I’ll be content with just running a strong and fun race. Other than that, I have the Smuttynose Half Marathon – my only half of the year (so far) – in October.
Before I leave for a run you must have: My music (AKA my phone) and my Garmin. And a hat or visor.
Do you have one favorite app to track your runs?
Not really, although I do use the Nike + app on occasion.
Who is your favorite running partner?
I’ve always been a solo runner, but I have recently come to the conclusion that I need company – and motivation — during my long runs. The longer I’ve been running, the more I’ve seen my self-discipline slip. Lately, I’ve been quick to give in when I’m tired and say, “Screw it!” mid-run when I feel like taking a quick walking break. And, if we’re being honest, my long runs haven’t been fun. More and more, I suspect having a running buddy, and looking at my long runs as a social event rather than a chore I “have” to do, may help.
What races have you ran so far this year?
I definitely made a conscious decision to not run as many races this year, so right now, I’m currently up to four (a 5K with Buddy, a 10K, a 10K trail race, and a 5-miler), with number five (a 10-miler) happening on Sunday.
If you had to give someone one piece of advice about running what would it be?
Buy a good pair of running shoes!! Seriously, don’t buy them online. As much as it sucks paying extra, it’s worth it to be measured by a qualified specialist – and preferably from a store that has a generous return policy! (I’ve had to return shoes on more than one occasion).
Describe your relationship with running in one word: Complicated.
Also, in honor of National Running Day, I’m excited to share a pretty sweet deal from Women’s Running magazine: a 6 month subscription to Women’s Running for only $5! But you have to act fast: this deal is good for today only. I heart Women’s Running (and not just Buddy and I were featured in the magazine a couple years ago) so I hope you can take advantage of this special deal!
Feel free to link up your National Running Day post below!

I’m not running today either…I am also sticking to my schedule which means I do yoga today. Without yoga, there would be no running! 🙂

I didn’t run yesterday either. My husband was out of town and the weather was crummy. It just wasn’t in the cards. I did pick up my race bib for my race on Saturday, so that counts! Good luck in your race Saturday!
