First, a disclaimer: I did not watch the red carpet arrivals.
These days, that is usually the only part of an awards show that I’ll actually watch. As a busy mom with little kids, a lack of babysitters and no premium cable channels, it’s highly unlikely that I’ve actually seen any of the movies/shows nominated in the major categories unless the studio was Pixar or the show airs on Nickelodeon.
So it’s hard to have a vested interest in the awards themselves, unlike my days as a single gal when I would have seen every nominated movie (sometimes twice) and maybe have entered our Oscar office pool.
But the fashion, on the other hand, I’ll always have an interest in – even when the red carpet arrivals coincide with the Patriots playoff game.
First, let me just say, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler looked amazing! Seriously! Both have had questionable style moments in the past, but these ladies really pulled it off this year, which makes me smile, since I love them both so.
Here are my personal picks for:
**** Best Dressed *****
Naomi Watts in Zac Posen
Gorgeous color, love the cut and the back (not pictured here) is soooo sexy while being elegant at the same time. Plus the hair and makeup are perfection.
Jennifer Garner in Vivienne Westwood Couture
I will preface this by saying two things: I have a total girl crush on Jennifer Garner and I have a thing for red dresses (as my bridesmaids well know). But aside from that, I adore this dress, especially when paired with the gold accents. Oh, and Jen, if you want to be friends, send me an email, we can do lunch.
Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen
This is not a dress I think I would ever pick for myself, but for some reason I am totally drawn to it.
Thandie Newton in Giles
This dress is one I could totally picture myself wearing (you know, because I get invited to so many galas and balls). And kudos on going with a mini-dress! Love it.
Julianna Margulies in Pucci
Sometimes I look at this and I love it, and other times I’m not so sure. I think I’ll go with love it (plus the back is really pretty).
Honorable mentions: Jessica Alba, Lea Michele, Michelle Dockery, Jennifer Lawrence, Tina Fey, Emily Blunt, Sofia Vergara, Megan Fox, Carla Gugino.
***** Worst Dressed *****
Julianne Hough in Monique Lhuillier
Poor Julianne was also on my Emmy’s Worst Dressed List. It’s like she decides she wants to look like “Awards Show Barbie,” with all the poof and fussiness and weird hair. Julianne: you’re a pretty woman, you don’t need all that. Say it with me: Sometimes less is more.
Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein
Oh, Jess, this one pains me to write because you are such a talented actress. But the cut and fit of this dress really aren’t doing you – or your girls – any justice. And the color is meh. Plus, not sure what you were thinking with the hair?
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad
Yawn. JLo, haven’t we seen this look from you before, like a thousand times?
Julianne Moore in Tom Ford
Love Tom Ford but I feel like this is Julianne Moore channeling Sarah Palin, no? Isn’t this something you’d totally picture Ms. Palin wearing to an awards show?
Halle Berry in Versace
Yeah, I don’t get it either. Maybe she thought she was headed to a pool party in Maui instead of the Golden Globes?
Nicole Richie in Naeem Khan
Hurts. My. Eyes. (And don’t get my started on the eyeshadow. Or why she’s at an awards show in the first place). Many fashion insiders loved this look from head to toe. Again, I’ll say it: I don’t get it.
Honorable mentions: Sienna Miller, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria, Heidi Klum, Morena Baccarin, Rosario Dawson, Lucy Liu.
What were your picks for best/worst dressed?
Jennifer (Savor) says
I agree with everything….except Julianne’s dress. A bit over the top but really unique.

ha – I thought Lucy Liu looked like she was wearing my grandmother’s old couch or curtains. The shape was beautiful, just not so much the pattern. I actually like the color of Jessica Chastain’s dress but the fit up top was not flattering at all. I loved Anne Hathaway and Selma Hayek — gorgeous, sexy, but simple, elegant and classic. And yes, Tina & Amy rocked it!

I loved Connie Britton and Claire Danes. I was disappointed in Jessica Alba…I thought the color of her dress didn’t compliment her very well, but she still made it to the best dressed category.

I like your picks! I don’t think Nicole Richie’s dress was too bad, but what’s with the clutch?! She needed a dressier clutch… I wish I had beeen able to watch the red carpet or even see some of the chatter after…having no wifi & iffy cell service on vacation is tough! 😉

You are spot on! Love this post because I am a huge fan of the Golden Globes. Thanks so much!

How about Lucy Liu’s dress, I loved how unique it was.

Haha – I totally agree with EVERY one of your choices for Best/Worst! I had the same reaction to Nicole Richie: WHY IS SHE THERE!?
