So this week’s Five for Friday is going to be slightly different, and is inspired by an activity I’m participating in tomorrow … one that will force me to confront one of my greatest fears.
I am taking a trapeze class.
Yes, I will be learning how to fly through the air with the greatest of ease, just like Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City,” except my class will be held in a furniture store in greater Boston (although it IS run by the same NYC trapeze school).
But there’s one thing. I kind of have a fear of heights.
Last summer, I took Buddy to a local kids science museum (the Ecotarium in Worcester, MA) where they had a kid-friendly zip line up in the trees. Buddy got hooked up and without hesitation took off, shrieking with delight the whole way down.
Meanwhile I stood on that platform for what seemed like an eternity, trying to drum up the courage to step off as my then-6-year-old called from the ground, “C’mon, Mommy, you can do it!”
Eventually I did, and I admit it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be, but it also didn’t instantaneously cure my fear of heights.
So why am I taking a trapeze class again?? Ahh, good question!
I guess in my case, curiosity must outweigh fear, because I have been intrigued by the idea of a trapeze class for quite some time and think (potential panic attacks aside) it will be a lot of fun. Plus my friend J and I are making a girls night out of it (kudos to her for always being game for my random blogging adventures … we’re taking on SoulCycle next!).
Anyway, in the spirit of facing your fears, here are five of my random fears and phobias:
1. Heights
2. Bridges
3. Bees (hmm, actually, all insects is probably more accurate)
4. Birds (I’m not afraid of them, but I really, really dislike them)
5. Small, confined spaces (I could never be a spelunker!)

I actually LOVE heights, so this class sounds like a blast! And I’m sure once you do it the first time, and feel how fun it is, it will be easier!! YOU CAN DO IT!!
I have a few phobias, but my most bizarre is a fear of Shaving Injuries lol I can’t watch razor commercials because I’m afraid they are going to cut themselves in a terrible way! haha

Thank you!!!!! I am just hoping I don’t (a) pass out, (b) throw up, (c) cry, or (d) all of the above :> No, seriously, I agree – I think once I get one turn under my belt, I’ll be okay, but I was looking at the ladder you have to climb to get to the platform and holy hell!

Heights, mice, open sea (like I don’t like being in the middle of the ocean), needles, smell of smoke (loss my home in a fire a few years ago).
How do I deal with them? For the needles I tell myself is going to hurt for less than a second. For any other I just deal with it. I’m going on a cruise sometime this year so the fear of open sea I’m so going to have to deal with it.
