I admit, I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore – especially the shows that are perennial Emmy favorites (Modern Family, Mad Men, etc). We don’t have HBO or Showtime. I’ve never seen Girls or Homeland, and I don’t think I’ve ever watched anything on AMC (although Dr. G swears by Breaking Bad). I really only watch four shows religiously: Project Runway, What Not to Wear, Glee and The Amazing Race. Interesting mix, right? Makes you think I’m the kind of person who likes to wear designer clothes and belt out show tunes as I dig through a pile of manure or dive off a cliff. Hmmm …
So believe me when I say I am the last person to weigh in on last night’s Emmy awards or rant and rave about who got robbed (although did I see correctly that Duckie from Pretty in Pink won?).
What I can comment on is the fashion because, if we’re being honest, I don’t watch the awards telecast itself – just the arrivals. But before I get into my favorites/least favorites (I’ll try to suppress by inner Joan Rivers), I have to say – I was kind of indifferent. Or maybe the word is underwhelmed? Admittedly, I’m not a glittery, sequins kind of girl, but I thought most of the dresses just seemed really fussy. As in lots of netting and beading and sequins and bold patterns. On the exact opposite end of the spectrum, there were also quite a few sad, nude/blush-colored gowns.
I know it’s a matter of personal style (I do tend to gravitate towards clean, simple lines), so I guess it’s not surprising that these ladies stood out:
I think this entire look is gorgeous. A white gown can be tricky to wear, but I’m digging it with the black belt and accessories and red lip (plus Jessica Pare from Mad Men has the gorgeous skin and dark hair to pull off the white). You can never go wrong with white, black and red – one of my favorite color combos. My top look of the night.
Love this: bright color, clean lines, no need for fussy jewelry. Although I wish Padma Lakshmi had done a little something to her hair.
Okay, I know I said all that about sequins, but if I was going to wear sequins to an event like this, THIS is what I would wear. She looks cool. But I have no idea what show Kerry Washington is on (I still think of her as Julia Stiles’ friend in Save the Last Dance).
I heart the color green. It’s not an easy color for everyone to wear but Allison Williams (who apparently is Brian Williams’ daughter and is on the HBO show Girls) looks gorgeous. I’m not usually a fan of architectural details but I actually like the neckline. Plus she has a little peplum action going on.
Honorable mentions: Gretchen Mol, Sarah Hyland, Kate Mara, Kat Dennings (although, yikes, she must have had some industrial strength , double-sided lingerie tape!)
My least favorites? Oh, where to start? How about the mermaids?
Enough said.
I have no idea what show Lena Headey is on, but I think she thought the Emmys was a Halloween costume party. Isn’t this the costume that girls who want to look “sexy” wear to the Halloween kegger at the frat house (a la Kelly Taylor on 90210)?
I feel bad for picking on Lena Dunham. It’s true that I’ve never seen her show Girls, but from everything I’ve read, it sounds like she is an extremely talented writer, actress and director. Maybe that’s why she was too busy to hire a stylist?
Others that stood out for me (and not in a good way):
- Zooey Deschanel’s Disney-inspired gown
- Julianne Moore: a “Sister Wife” in neon
- Kristin Wiig’s nightie
- Elisabeth Moss’ “Haven’t we seen this already?” look
- Hayden Panettiere’s homage to ancient Greece (too bad, because I love Marchesa)
I have to admit, doing my own fashion review was kind of fun, but please take my comments with a grain of salt because I am most definitely not a fashion expert. On most days I’m lucky if I (a) showered, (b) remembered to wear deodorant, or (c) am wearing clothes that are not decorated with child snot or spilled coffee. But thanks for indulging me …
Question: Do you actually watch award shows? Or just the arrivals?
