I’ve never been shy here about the fact that Beverly Hills, 90210 (original version, not the reboot) is my favorite show. But coming in at a very close second is arguably the best mother-daughter duo in TV history, at least in my opinion: Gilmore Girls.
I adore Gilmore Girls and all of its witty, rapid-fire dialogue fabulousness. I still have dreams of moving to Stars Hollow and attending one of their zillion (and often bizarre) town festivals. I want to eat at Luke’s Diner and go to Friday night dinners at Richard and Emily’s. I was rooting for Rory to find a guy that wasn’t (a) sullen (like Jess); (b) vanilla (like Dean), or (c) a spoiled brat (like Logan).
And, yes, part of me hopes Mimi and I have the sort of mother-daughter relationship that Lorelai and Rory have on the show.
So you can only imagine my reaction when Netflix announced all 7 seasons – yes, 7 – of Gilmore Girls is now available on Netflix streaming. Cue the ecstatic shrieking!!! Crank up Carole King’s “Where You Lead”!
Here are some of my all-time favorite Gilmore Girls episodes that I’m queuing up in Netflix Streaming as we speak:
- “Pilot” (Season 1): It’s like a cheat sheet: This episode lays the foundation for basically the whole series.
- “Rory’s Birthday Parties” (Season 1, Episode 6): This one just makes me smile. Especially when Richard takes a Cosmo quiz at the end of the episode.
- “The Road Trip to Harvard” (Season 2, Episode 4): While I love the zany Stars Hollow people, they can be distracting sometimes, so I love episodes that focus exclusively on Lorelai and Rory. And the Harvard backdrop is nice, too.
- “The Bracebridge Dinner” (Season 2, Episode 10): Yes, I’m contradicting my previous statement, but this episode perfectly illustrates the quirkiness that is Stars Hollow and its townsfolk. And there’s also a murdered snowman.
- “I Can’t Get Started” (Season 2, Episode 22): We have a Lorelai and Christopher reunion, pregnant ex-girlfriends, Jess kissage …. lots of drama here.
- “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” (Season 3, Episode 7): How can you pass up an episode that features a dance marathon? Plus I totally had the same red J.Crew coat as Rory in this episode.
- “A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving” (Season 3, Episode 9): Hmm, let’s see, there’s a drunk Sookie, Tofurky, four Thanksgiving dinners … I just wish I had a Gilmore metabolism.
- “The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale” (Season 4, Episode 2): I love that it tugs on the heartstrings for those of us who remember the first day of college — and then we have high strung roommate Paris and her arts and crafts corner and life coach. Classic Gilmore Girls.
- “Raincoats and Recipes” (Season 4, Episode 22): Rory gives it up. But you’ll never guess to who.
- “Written in the Stars” (Season 5, Episode 3): Rory meets Logan (ugh) but it’s Luke and Lorelai’s first official date … finally!
- Hard to pick an episode from Season 6 (hated the whole Luke’s surprise daughter plot line) but this is when Rory had her best hair, hands down. Just sayin’.
- “Bon Voyage” (Season 7, Episode 22): Best season finale. Love that Rory went to cover the Obama campaign! Little did we know … Oh, and Rory’s bangs are awesome.

Every time I cruising through the stations and see that it’s on, I’m compelled to stop and watch even though I never really followed the series. I’m all sorts of happy that they are now streaming Friends!
