I think that about sums it up why I decided to join some of my fellow bloggers and the amazing team at Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the fight against childhood cancer.
During the month of September, our team — Bloggers Go Gold — will walk, run and bike as many miles as we can to contribute to Alex’s Lemonade Stand’s ultimate million mile goal during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
By doing so, we will be joining forces with so many others around the country to work toward better treatments and ultimately cures for all kids with cancer while also raising vital awareness of the number one killer of children under the age of 15 in the United States.
About 18 months ago, I participated in a fundraising event coordinated by an amazing group of fellow bloggers to raise funds for a member of our group, whose young daughter, Belle, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at the age of two-and-a-half.
Not much younger than Mimi.
I was still pretty new to blogging back then and didn’t know most of those ladies, but to say I was impressed and inspired by their compassion and determination would be an understatement. Thanks to their efforts, thousands of dollars were raised for Belle’s family to help offset their medical costs.
Although I never met Belle, her story stuck with me .. along with the many stories of other children stricken with cancer I encountered in my years of working in one of the nation’s top pediatric hospitals. As a parent, I cannot imagine what it is like to have a child diagnosed with cancer. So I didn’t have to think twice about joining up with Bloggers Go Gold.
Especially since I am in the final stages of half marathon training, which means maximum miles (at least for me). How could I not use those miles for good?
Here’s more info about Alex’s Million Mile:
There are various ways that miles can be logged by participants from coast to coast: parents can walk their children to school each day, logging one mile each way; families can walk to Friday night dinners and back; instead of taking public transportation, individuals can run or bike to work or evening outings. The possibilities are endless!
Need more convincing?
So donate to our team, purchase one of our T-shirts, form your own team, spread the word … do what you can to help. I’ll be sharing periodic updates using the hashtag #Journey2aMillion.

Childhood cancer is really devastating. I have been amazed by the strength of families in my community who are dealing with it. I have to hide behind my sunglasses and cry sometimes and I am just a bystander. I love what you are all doing as a group of bloggers to raise awareness and money for a cause that hurts too many families.

I love this idea and give to charities helping children with cancer as often as possible. I’ve had two cousins pass away from cancer. One was very fast (like 2 weeks) and the other was over the course of 4 years. It’s a terrible, terrible thing.

One of my good friends in HS passed away from cancer. It is horrible to see what the loss of a child can do to a family. It is amazing that you are raising funds! No better cause if you ask me!
