It’s no secret: I don’t like summer running. Sorry. I know some people love getting a full sweat on when it’s 90 degrees, but I’m not one of them. Give me a Turkey Trot or a 50-degree run surrounded by New England foliage any day.
Now that the official start of fall is a few weeks away — and I enjoyed my first cooler weather run over the weekend — I thought it was only appropriate to bid farewell to my nemesis, summer runnning. But this is no ordinary farewell. Know the song “Summer Nights” from Grease?
Of course you do.
Keep that in mind when reading this goodbye (or should I say good riddance?) to summer running (and I apologize if that song is stuck in your head all day) …
Summer Runs
Summer running sure kicked my ass
Summer running, I ran out of gas
Blisters and chafing were all new to me!
And don’t get me started on the humidity.
Summer runs, you’re no stinkin’ fun
So long, oh you summer runs
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you run very far?
Tell me more, tell me more,
Uh, no, it’s like running in tar!
A half mile in and I got my first cramp
Its 90 degrees, my shirt’s soaked, not damp
Legs like lead and gasping for air
Sweat trickling down, well, everywhere!
Summer sun, yeah, I’m totally done
Farewell, oh you summer runs.
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?
Tell me more, tell me more
Every mile’s a fight!
Finished my water by mile three
Sweating so much – at least I don’t have to pee.
Holy crap, four more miles to go?!
Trying to speed up but my pace is so slow!
Summer heat, yep, you sure have me beat
Oh oh, those brutal summer runs.
Well-a, well-a, well-a, uh!
Tell me more, tell me more
This weather make it’s so hard to train
Tell me more, tell me more
Now I find myself wishing for rain!
It’s turning colder; now this will end
Tight and layers, oh, hello my dear friends.
Faster paces, fall races, I’m ready for you.
Not too hot or too cold, and oh, what a view!
Summer runs …. you’re just not the one
But, ohhhhhhh, goodbye summer runs.
So do you miss those summer runs? Or are you jazzed for fall??
P.S. Ok, so I think it’s pretty obvious, but I’m going to say it anyway: I exaggerated a little of this, but trust me, I have no love for summer running.

LOL, when I read the title I was thinking this was going to be about what I tend to do which is stop running once it gets too cold! I like your poem!

I am so with you! So looking forward to the cooler temps especially now that my marathon training miles are increasing. 13 yesterday and it was still hot but the end is in site. Love, love the song!

I don’t know how you did all that training during the summer! I only now started getting into double-digit runs for my half in October and I can’t imagine doing that in July! Good luck w/your marathon 🙂

I must admit that I don’t hate summer running. Ouch. But I do seek shady runs and mostly in early morning or late afternoon. LOVE the lyrics! I’ll remember them next summer! Fall runs? Perfect. And I love winter runs, too. I’m odd, I guess. Thanks for the smiles today…

That’s a great strategy. I tried so hard to do that, but my weekend mornings always seem to get away from me. Of course, I’m sure I’ll be complaining again come February. I am a picky runner 🙂 LOL.

So funny! Grease was my favorite musical growing up, so I followed along to the tune easily. 🙂 Pinned this!

I’m no songstress but my feelings about summer running and that song just fit so perfectly! Plus I’m a sucker for parodies. Thanks for pinning!

O.M.G. This made me laugh SO HARD. I HATE summer running. Gimme some cold air, STAT.

I hear you!! Of course, because we all love karma, I now see the temps here in the Boston area are going to reach close to 90 the next few days. Sigh.

A friend linked me to this and it made my day. I have been trying to train to run a 5K and I had to give up most of July because I just cannot run (or do anything) when it’s that hot and humid out because it makes me very ill. Cooler weather is coming, but sadly where I am it’s gone back up to 90-100F this week because of humidity. Just STOP already!
Thanks for the laugh!

Glad I made you giggle 🙂 And it’s so refreshing to know I’m not the only one who feels this way!!! Good luck with your training!
