I have officially signed up for my first race of the year! This 5K will be a special race for many reasons: it’s right here in my hometown; supports the elementary PTO, which I’m actively involved in; and will (hopefully) be the first race Buddy and I run together.
Training has been really tough of late due to the weather, but as of a few weeks ago, he was up to 1.5 miles! I’m so proud of him! Every time we head out to the junior high track (perfect for him, since we can count laps and loops), he runs next to me, looking up with a goofy smile on his face. I love that this is something we can do together.
The challenge is that he is naturally a speedy sprinter of a runner, but not a big fan of more endurance running. But, to his credit, he was on board with the challenge (even if he usually starts complaining after the first mile) and I think I can get him over the finish line in 30 minutes.
But this got me thinking about the rest of my 2015 race schedule. As I wrote a few weeks ago, I’m taking a different approach to my running goals in 2015, and since my foot is still not 100%, I think I’m going to have to play much of it by ear.
But as the snow continues to fall in New England this winter, I can’t help but fantasize about those glorious spring and fall races.
Plus I’m starting to seriously consider some new kinds of racing for me… namely relays (Ragnar or Reach the Beach) and/or trail races.
So while I’m not committing to any of these, this is what my 2015 racing schedule tentatively looks like:
March
Shamrock Shuffle 5K with Buddy
April
James Joyce Ramble 10K — a personal favorite (and my first real “long” race!)
Harpoon 5-Miler – Fingers crossed I get into the lottery!
June
Newport 10 Miler – My favorite race last year! Unfortunately, they had to move it from late April to June 7…Mimi’s 4th birthday. Of course. But Dr. G. and I found a way to make it work.
July
Blessing of the Fleet – This has been on my bucket list for awhile
August
Beach to Beacon 10K – I’m going to keep entering this lottery until I get picked!
September
ZOOMA Half Marathon or 10K … not sure yet which distance I’ll do. (Want to join me?? Click here to register and use the code JESSICAG15 to save 10% on either the half marathon or 10K!)

Awe, he is SO CUTE! Love that you can run together! I vote you try out a trail race. They’re my favorite. It’s so much nicer to train and race in nature than on cement sidewalk. My running heart is on the trails.
